The evolution of sustainable resilience in Indonesia reflects a paradigm shift from a reactive to a proactive approach in dealing with disasters. The establishment of a more systematic legal and policy framework, through key events and actions such as the passage of the Disaster Management Law in 2007 and the establishment of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), marks Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening disaster risk governance.
This Study Report was made possible by the participation of some 500 stakeholders from across the Indo-Pacific region and beyond. They engaged in a series of 4 monthly seminars between May and August 2024, which culminated in the convening of the “2nd Global Forum for Sustainable Resilience” in September 2024. This book, "The Coastal Community Speaks: Inspirational Stories of Coastal Community Resilience," captures the profound strength and wisdom of Indonesian coastal communities facing natural disasters and climate change. Through a collection of personal stories, it highlights how these communities have developed unique resilience practices, from mangrove conservation to local disaster preparedness, which protect both lives and livelihood.
This remarkable work dynamic left Eka barely enough time to think about herself and her family. It was the humanitarian call that led her and other Sekber members to operate beyond their official duties. Fortunately, this yielded positive results. The data managed by Sekber became not only a reference for policies and information shared by the media but also the basis for monitoring and evaluating the aid they received.
