E-Book Launch – Living with a Volcano in Your Backyard: Stories from the Volcanic Communities of Indonesia

The National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB) supported by the Australian Government through the SIAP SIAGA Program compiled a publication on local wisdom and best practices from the people living in the areas of seven active volcanoes in Indonesia.

“Living with a Volcano in Your Backyard” tells of stories, experiences and good practices in volcano communities related to their efforts to live in harmony side by side with threats and disaster risks.

This book is discussed interactively in the 2022 GPDRR at the Resilience Stage session, with Pangarso Suryotomo (Director of Preparedness, BNPB), Tasril Mulyadi (BNPB), Kanjeng Prince Haryo Notonegoro (SIAP SIAGA Program Advisor) as guest speakers and moderated by Nia Firtica (SIAP SIAGA Program) .

Through this book, stakeholders, especially disaster management actors, can learn lessons and results from disaster risk reduction efforts that have been carried out in their respective regions. The lessons shared by the seven volcano communities also clearly show how community preparedness and resilience through an economic approach is one of the keys to sustaining community-based disaster risk management in active volcano areas and shows how important it is to build resilience locally.

It is hoped that this book will serve as an inspiration for other communities in increasing their resilience in order to reduce the potential impact of disaster risk in the future. This publication is proof of the Government of Indonesia’s success in promoting and facilitating community-driven disaster preparedness initiatives, which were launched through Disaster Preparedness Day (Hari Kesiapsiagaan Bencana) on 26 April 2022.

The e-book is available in 2 languages – Indonesian and English and can be downloaded via the following link: BNPB Library.
